Tip of the MonthAs you cut back on your water use during the drought, don't forget to water your trees. Unlike grass, if trees are left un-watered for a long period of time, they can die during a drought. It's best to water before 10am or after 6pm to avoid water getting evaporated by the sun. When watering, we recommend to apply water directly to the roots, and avoid getting the trunk wet.

SB1383 New Regulations - Starting Jan. 1, 2022California passed a new law (SB 1383) that aims to reduce organic waste from going to the landfill, which decomposes and emits greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. It also aims to recover edible food to donate to the 1 in 5 Californians that are food insecure. What does this mean? Starting January 1, 2022, all businesses, multifamily properties, and residents, even those that may have been exempt in the past, will now be required to have organics recycling services. Some food generating businesses will also need to participate in edible food recovery programs. For more information, visit calrecycle.ca.gov/organics.

What does 15 % reduction in water use look like?Governor Newsom is asking all California residents to voluntarily reduce their water use by 15%. On average, a California resident uses about 196 gallons per day, and 30-60% of their water is outdoors. Below, are four ways you can reduce your water consumption. Find the right combination for you to reduce 15% or 29 gallons a day. - Use a broom, not a hose. By using a broom to clean outdoor areas instead of a hose, you could be saving 8-18 gallons per minute.
- Water plants, not sidewalks. The most common problem we see are sprinklers spraying the pavement, and water runoff. The next time you run your irrigation, make sure to adjust the heads if needed, to save 12-15 gallons each time you water.
- Install a "Smart" Controller. A smart weather-based irrigation controller can help water your lawn by automatically adjusting the watering schedule based on local weather conditions. The City has a rebate up to $150. Click here to learn more.
- Skip Irrigation. If you skip a shower you can save about about 30 gallons, but if your lawn skips a watering day, you can save more than 250 gallons of water.

Volunteer for Coastal Cleanup Day!Join us in cleaning up our City on Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 9 am to noon. The City of Woodland Sustainability Advisory Committee has sponsored this year’s Coastal Cleanup Day to help clean up problem areas in Woodland. This year, we will focus on picking up litter and trash dumped at the Deaner Ave. Stormwater Ditch. While we may not have a coast here in Woodland, litter enters water ways through stormwater canals located inland and make its way to rivers and eventually the ocean. Gloves, buckets, and reusable water bottles are encouraged. Extra supplies will also be available. Dressing in long pants and brightly colored clothing is also strongly encouraged. Click here to register and for more information.
