This summer, reconstruction of Gibson Road between East Street and County Road 98 will modify traffic signals at intersections. Once modified, the signals will be in fixed time operation, meaning that each approach to the intersection will receive a green light even if no vehicle is present. This will be a temporary situation. When the Gibson Road project is complete, the signals will be returned to normal operation. In normal operation, the signal has detection systems that sense vehicles and bicyclists so that green lights are only provided when necessary.
Fixed time operation is required because the sensors that normally detect vehicles must be taken out of service for the project work. The timing at the signals will be set to always allow pedestrians and bicycles to cross the intersections even when they are not present and may make trips feel longer to drivers. When contractors work near the intersections, the signals may periodically be placed in red flash operation. In this circumstance, drivers should the signal as an all-way stop. Near school areas and work zones, drivers are cautioned to be especially mindful of pedestrians, bicyclists, and workers.
We understand that this may result in some travel delays and appreciate your patience as we work to improve Gibson. Please plan accordingly, be patient, and drive safely!
