The City of Woodland is pleased to announce the renewal of rebate funds for mulch, rain barrels, weather-based irrigation controllers (WBIC), compost bins and vermicompost bins for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2019.
Available rebates include:
- $100 for plant-based mulch
- $75 for a rain barrel, limit 2 per property
- $150 for a weather-based irrigation controller (WBIC) or “smart controller”
- $100 for a backyard compost bin
- $100 for a vermicompost bin
- $75 for residential street tree(s)
A good mulch can conserve water by significantly reducing moisture evaporation from the soil. Mulch also helps maintain healthy plants by moderating soil temperature, which keeps their roots stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter. In addition, it helps prevent soil compaction and reduces weed populations.
Rain barrels capture and store high-quality rainwater for later use in gardens, direct overflow water away from building foundations to desired locations, and divert water from storm drains. Stored rainwater is often used to irrigate landscaping because it is free of chlorine, calcium, and other minerals.
WBICs allow for more accurate, customized irrigation by automatically adjusting a landscape’s irrigation schedule and water use in response to changing weather conditions. Landscapes are often overwatered by as much as 20-40%. Studies have shown that using a WBIC can reduce a household’s outdoor water use by about 20%.
Composting is nature’s way of recycling. It provides a positive economic and environmental benefit by reducing yard waste in our streets and food waste in the landfill turning organic materials into rich soil amendments. Compost adds nutrients to our yards and gardens and helps control weeds and retain soil moisture.
Trees cool hot streets, sidewalks and homes, resulting in significant energy savings. They filter harmful carbon dioxide from the air and replace it with life-giving oxygen, while providing shelter to wildlife and privacy to homes. Trees also increase property values, add beauty and grace to our community, and become a priceless heritage for future generations.
