City of Woodland CalFire Urban and Community Forestry Grant Update

The City of Woodland, in partnership with the Woodland Tree Foundation, recently completed the first year of a three-year, California Climate Investment grant from Cal Fire’s Urban and Community Forestry program. The grant, awarded to the city at $356,850, will enhance Woodland’s tree canopy and ensure a healthy and resilient urban forest through two major elements. The first is to plant 1,200 trees on private and public property within the three years and the second is to develop an Urban Forest Master Plan.

So far, 536 trees have been planted by volunteers and city staff. The resulting perceived Green House Gas (GHG) reduction over a 40-year period is equivalent to taking 454 vehicles off the road for a year - 2122 Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Emissions (MTCO2e). Visit www.woodlandtree.org if you would like a tree planted at your home, to volunteer at a tree planting event, or to learn more about how to best care for your trees.

As part of this tree planting effort, the city will be hosting a tree planting at Jack Slaven Park this Friday, July 27th organized in collaboration with the Woodland Tree Foundation and UC Davis, for Mandela Washington Fellows for Young African Leaders. The Mandela Washington Fellowship, begun in 2014, is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that empowers young people from Sub-Saharan Africa through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. This is the third year the fellows have planted trees in Woodland.  Thirty trees will be planted at the park.

In addition to planting trees, a key element of the grant is the development of an Urban Forest Management Plan. The plan examines how to manage Woodland’s community forest to maximize resiliency, benefits to the community and environment, and more.  On May 23rd, the city held a community workshop where Davey Resources Group, the consultants preparing the plan, presented on the current status of Woodland’s urban forest and an overview of the Urban Forest Management Plan’s goals and asked for input from the community.  Woodland’s urban forest assessment, community presentation, and more information can be found online at www.cityofwoodland.org/trees under the “Cal Fire Grant” tab.
