The Planning Division functions as the professional and technical advisor to the Planning and Historic Preservation Commissions (citizen appointed) and to the City Council on policy matters and issues concerning the physical development of the community. Public Information & Services
Public Information and Services, and as such the Division is responsible for providing timely and accurate information to the public through our counter at City Hall, as well as by phone or email. If you have a question about development or use of your property in the City this is your first stop.
Current Planning primarily involves the review, analysis and processing of all development related applications (additions, remodels, new building, etc.). This includes ensuring that all projects are in compliance with the Zoning Ordinance and related Community Design Standards, that they are consistent with the goals and policies of the General Plan and in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). With a submittal a planner will be assigned to a project from design to occupancy.
Advanced Planning, primarily involves the administration and update of the General Plan and Specific Plans; Zoning Code amendments, conducting special studies, managing Historic Preservation program, and responding to other governmental entities/jurisdictions on a variety of planning projects and regulations.
Development is a team effort, the Planning Division coordinates activities among the other departments relating to land development, traffic and utilities; Fire Safety, Building Division, and Police to ensure that development is safe, orderly, of the highest architectural standard, and conducive to the business community.
