The Woodland Public Library is excited to be holding its first ever Summer of Learning throughout June and July. This summer the community is invited to Read for the Win and more! There are programs for all ages: babies and toddlers, children, teens, and adults. Families can register for these summer programs on the library’s website or in the library on the catalog computers.
The Summer of Learning begins on Saturday, June 4th, with a Kickoff Party for families at 1 pm. There will be bounce houses, food trucks, face and nail painting, fun activities with the Rec2Go Van and Kuk Sool Won, and a food truck selling lunch and snacks. Everyone can get their Summer Learning logs, calendars, and a raffle ticket. Prizes will be raffled off throughout the event, including museum and zoo tickets, storytime bags with books, Farmers Market bucks, games, garden supplies, coding books, and other great prizes.
Babies and toddlers get a special log where families can cross off early literacy activities like singing songs, playing with blocks, dancing, and reading, as they do them. Babies can earn a board book and a prize by participating in these fun activities.
Children can earn tickets to buy prizes from the prize store by reading, gardening, playing sports, visiting museums, practicing computer programming, and more! There are weekly events for children at the Library including themed craft and activity evenings on alternating Thursdays from 5-6, afternoon martial arts classes and outdoor games on alternating Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30, and drop-in Hour of Code on Wednesdays from 2:30-3:30. There will be three Saturday performances from 2-3 in the Leake Room: DRUMMM on June 25th, Mark Bunnell the Juggling Tornado on July 9th, and Xtreme Science Magic on July 23rd. A fourth show with BMX Bike Stunts is on Tuesday, July 26th from 2-3 in the parking lot. Calendars and logs will be given out at the Kickoff Party and throughout the summer. Funding for the Kickoff Party and summer performers was generously supplied by the Friends of the Woodland Public Library.
Teens are invited to complete challenges and earn prizes as they complete more and more throughout the summer. Teens can earn community service hours when they volunteer during the weekly events for children and help prepare crafts and activities. There will also be exclusive, teen’s only events in collaboration with the Community Services Department like a pool party at the Community Pool on June 24th at 6 pm and the West Side Story Movie Night on June 29th at 7 pm at the Community and Senior Center. Teens can sign up at www.woodlandlibraryteens.com.
Adults will also have an opportunity to “Read for the Win” from June 4th through August 6th. The program provides a venue for adults to revisit their childhood summer reading programs and supports and encourages reading in the adult community. Adults will get to read daily to earn bronze, silver, and gold medals that lead to raffle tickets and the chance to win some great prizes. Funding for the raffle prizes is generously provided by the Friends of the Woodland Public Library and the Woodland Public Library Literacy Services.
Weekday library storytimes will continue from June 7th though July 28th. The library is hosting free summer lunches again, beginning on June 9th. Children up to age 18 can enjoy their free lunch on the library lawn weekdays from 11:30 to 11:50, followed by free popsicles for kids enjoying a book over lunch. The Saturday morning Farmers Market is back and on First Street in front of the library, from 9-12, with an outdoor family storytime at 10 am. The Markets will feature crafts for kids, monthly performers, and a Kids’ Farmers Market on third Saturdays, where kids are given free market bucks to spend on produce.
There is something for everyone in the Woodland community to enjoy this summer at the Woodland Public Library. Come take advantage of this amazing free community resource!
