October 3, 2011

Senior Center: Volunteers are needed to assist at the Welcome Desk at the Senior Center. Volunteer duties include assisting in the creation and facilitation of programs & activities, helping with monthly parties/dinners, and answering questions at the Welcome Desk. In addition to daily senior recreation opportunities at the Senior Center, upcoming events include a workshop on Medicare part D and flu shot clinic.

New Drop-In Gym Program: In response to a resident request to staff and the Parks and Recreation Commission to provide badminton playing opportunities, Parks & Recreation will be offering free drop-in badminton sessions on Tuesday mornings between 9:30 am - 11:30 am. This trial period will last from October 4th through December 13th.

Brooks Aquatic Center: Woodland continues to secure regional events at the Brooks Aquatics Center. Upcoming events include the UCD Water Polo Championships on October 1-2 (featuring USC, UCLA, Florida, Davis, Chico, Cal Poly, and others). Additionally, on October 14 -15, the Swim Center will be the location for the Christian Brothers High School Tournament Varsity Meet (the JV finals will also be held at the Swim Center on October 21 and 22).

Youth Updates: Summertime Fun Club 2011 wrapped up on August 5th. This was quite a successful year as over 200 children participated at three park sites over their eight week summer vacation. The Afterschool Fun Club at Maxwell Elementary began on August 10th. This great low-cost recreation program serves Maxwell students (and others) afterschool through 6:00 pm. Activities include sports, games, crafts and trips.
