City staff helped coordinate a tree planting ceremony at Ferns Park on March 26th for Samantha Thiel, an 18 year old Woodland resident who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Approximately thirty family members and friends attended this event to show their support for Samantha. Urban Forester’s Westley Schroeder and Fernando Munoz, along with assistance from Samantha planted a 12 foot Red Oak near the nature area on the north side of the park, right across the pathway from her friend‘s memorial tree (Leanna’s Tree), who recently passed away from this same unfortunate disease.
The Ceremony was led by her local Minister who blessed the ground, while Samantha spoke about the importance of the tree and what it will represent; a place where her family and friends can visit and reflect on her life. Samantha’s family, as well as Samantha herself was very grateful to all the City staff involved that helped bring this tree planting to life, as well as making her day a very memorable one.
