Residential Organics Recycling is Here!

March 1, 2018

Beginning March 1, 2018, Woodland residents that subscribe to green waste services through Waste Management can now put food scraps and food-soiled paper in the same cart as green waste and lawn clippings. Green waste carts (the carts with the brown lids) are now “organics” carts and will be collected the same as before—weekly and on the same day as trash and recycling.

All food items – including food scraps left on the dinner plate, trimmings from meal prep, expired food, and even cooled grease from cooking – can be placed in the organics cart. Food-soiled paper such as coffee filters with grounds, greasy pizza boxes, paper towels, and paper and cardboard take-out boxes can also be placed in the organics cart. Plastic wrapping and Styrofoam still need to go in the trash.

According to the CA Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle), 30 million tons of waste is disposed of in landfills each year in California. 30% of this waste is compostable organic material. When organic waste decomposes in landfills, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas roughly 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Moving organics out of the landfill will help Woodland reach our Climate Action Plan goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

All materials placed in the organics cart are taken to a facility where they are processed into compost for several uses, including farming and landscaping. Composting is a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way to process these materials and diverts them from the landfill – which also helps Woodland reach our goal to recycle 75% of our waste by 2020.

Organics recycling will not affect service rates or green waste street pile collections. Food waste and food-soiled paper are not accepted in street piles. As a reminder, Woodland residents are able to request a second organics cart at no charge. Contact Waste Management at (530) 662-8748 for service changes or questions.
