Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month
The Woodland Public Library invites everyone to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month on October 11 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the library’s courtyard.
This family friendly event will feature a bilingual story time, crafts, food and two special guests.
The first guest is the Honorable Judge Sonia Cortés, who is the first Latina/o ever appointed to the Yolo County bench. The library is featuring an exhibit that shares Ms. Cortés’ life accomplishments and this will be an excellent opportunity to hear Ms. Cortés’ speak about her personal journey to becoming the first Latina/o Judge for Yolo Superior Court.
Ms. Cortés says, “I am humbled and honored to be a part ofthe Woodland Public Library’s exhibit for National Hispanic Heritage month. I am hopeful that by exhibiting a piece of my life’s story, it can help to inspire the students of Yolo County to pursue their educational and career goals. As a daughter of farm workers, as an English language learner, and as a person who grew up and was educated in Yolo County, I am encouraged that my journey can serve as an example that with hard work, determination, and perseverance one can accomplish whatever they set their mind to.”
The second guest is the dance group, Folklorico Latino de Woodland, founded in 1986. Folklorico Latino de Woodland (FLDW) performs dancing styles originating from across many states in Mexico including Tamaulipas, Tabasco, Durango, Veracruz, Nuevo Leon, Baja California, and Aguascalientes. For the past 30 years, FLDW has been helping local youth develop a sense of pride in their roots and fostering awareness of Mexican culture in the community.
The National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration is free and all ages are invited. For more information, please contact Rhea Gardner at 530-661-5980.
