The Woodland Public Library is busy gearing up for all of our September programming for kids! Storytimes start up at the beginning of the month. There are morning storytimes for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and families, and a new monthly evening storytime with a special theme. September’s special storytime is a Pajama Storytime with a Stuffed Animal Sleepover. Families are invited to put on their pajamas and join the fun, bringing along a stuffed animal that would like a night of adventures at the library. The animal antics will be captured on film and video and posted to Facebook. Each stuffed animal will come home with a photo as well. This special event takes place Thursday, September 21st starting at 5:30 pm in the children’s room. No registration is necessary.
Our Afterschool Program also restarts in September, from 3:30 to 4:30 in the children’s room. We have board games on Tuesdays, Arts & Crafts on Wednesdays, and Lego Club on Thursdays. This month we will kickstart Tuesdays with some board game instruction. Wednesday crafts will be making kaleidoscopes, chalk painting, bean and seed collages, and scratch painting. These programs are geared towards 5-12 year olds.
Our all-ages Chess Club continues on Tuesday evenings from 6-9 in the Leake Room. Instruction is available, and we provide boards and clocks. This is a great family activity, perhaps for a parent and child interested in learning together, or practicing with others who enjoy the game.
Kids needing help with their homework can attend Homework Help at the library twice a week. This program is led by teen volunteers who meet with children in the front room of the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:30. The teens have basic supplies like paper and pencils, and are available to assist as needed.
We have interest lists at the desk for our coding classes with UC Davis Computer Science students. We will offer beginner classes with our Wonder Workshop robots, and some classes for more experienced kids using computers. Classes run during the UC Davis quarters, and will be offered on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. We also have an interest list for a new Graphic Novel Book Club for kids that will start later this fall and meet on one Monday a month. This will be a great opportunity to dive into some of the great titles available in this genre. If graphic novels are something you enjoy, come and add your name, along with some suggestions for books to read, to the list!
Our big event for September is the annual Pet Show. This year it will be on Saturday, September 23rd in front of the library, from 1:30-2:30. Children can enter their pets in one of four categories: best trick, best costume, most unusual, and best look-alike with owner. The show will judged by some local celebrities and prizes will be awarded to the winners. The talented photographer, Hope Harris, will return this year to photograph participants with their pets, as well as pets on their own. She does amazing work, and will provide one digital photograph for free. Prints can be ordered for an additional fee. Entry forms can be downloaded on our website, Facebook, and or picked up at the children’s desk in the library. Spectators are encouraged to come and root for their favorite animals!
We hope families will join us for some back-to-school fun this September at the library!
