This summer at the Woodland Public Library all ages can participate in our Summer Reading Program and Build a Better World! The program runs from June 1st through the end of July, and all ages can read five books and earn a prize. We will have paper logs again but are also using on online program called Beanstack, where participants can log more books and activities to earn more rewards like prizes and entries into a raffle. Summer Reading information is up on our website, and patrons can register for Beanstack there, or at wpl.beanstack.org using a smart phone, tablet, or computer.
Our goal is to help prevent the Summer Slide by encouraging kids to read at least five books over the summer, which is the California Library Association’s recommendation. We also want to provide broader learning possibilities for kids in addition to reading, since summer vacation often signals an end to these for a few months. We will be hosting drop-in Tech Tuesdays in our Leake Room where kids can try coding with computers or robots, and also play Minecraft every other week. We will have Lego Club on Wednesdays in the Children’s Room, and Maker Thursdays outside with weekly activities like an egg drop, science experiments, building challenges, and creating marshmallow shooters out of pvc pipe. Kids are also encouraged to do many other types of activities to earn points in our program, including community exploration, creative activities, helping around the house and the community, and more.
We will host four performers as well during the summer, to bring theater, music, and acrobatics to families. The Kickoff Party on June 10th, from 1-3, features the musical duo Musical Robot. Other interactive performances include Acrolele, performing musical acrobatics while telling the story of Kate and the Beanstalk, Adventure Theater, creating a mythic theatrical marvel with the help of the audience, and Circus of Smiles, juggling and entertaining families with their circus skills.
Because summer vacation can also mean food insecurity for kids, we will again be hosting free summer lunches in partnership with the school district. The lunches will be served on the library lawn from 12-12:30 Monday through Friday starting on June 12th and running through the first week in August. Meals are for kids 18 and under, and if kids read they also get a popsicle.
Young children, teens, and adults also can read five books to get a prize. Our Early Literacy Summer Program includes many early literacy activities that tie in to our Very Ready Reader Storytimes. Teens will read and volunteer at the summer events and programs while earning points and raffle tickets. Adults will also be earning points and raffle tickets as they read, and all ages receive a Build a Better World tote bag for registering.
