Seeking Nominations for Naming of New Park

The City of Woodland Parks & Recreation Commission is seeking nominations for the naming of a new park in the Spring Lake neighborhood. This future park which will be located on Osborn Drive and Shellhammer Drive and will be constructed in two phases.  The first phase will include the construction of 2-acres of park space which will be comprised of a 2-5 toddler playground area, picnic area, and turf fields.  The playground will have a theme which was decided on by a vote of area residents.  The second phase of the park, to be constructed when funding is available.  It will include a 5-12 age playground, a half basketball court, restrooms, native planting mounds, a walking/running path, bike path, picnic shelters, and will include several native and drought tolerant planting areas throughout the park. The first phase of the park is anticipated to open fall of 2017. 

Potential names must meet certain criteria outlined on a nomination form such as: (1) the name has local topographic, community, or historic significance or relates to an unusually significant feature of the facility generally recognized and known throughout the city, or 2) the name is after a person that has made a substantial contribution in terms of volunteer services, providing a broad recreational or environmental benefit to residents of the Woodland community, or 3) the name is after a person whose life or circumstances provides a compelling community-wide interest or sentiment.

The Parks & Recreation Commission will consider potential park names at the January 23, 2017 Commission meeting (6:30 pm at City Hall). A recommendation on the park name from the Parks & Recreation Commission is anticipated to be considered by the City Council at the February 7th City Council meeting.
