"Red Flag Warning" Issued in Yolo County

October 11, 2017

Due to low humidity and expected strong winds, the National Weather Service has issued a "Red Flag Warning" for much of Northern California including Yolo County and the greater Sacramento area for Wednesday and Thursday, October 11 and 12. Extreme caution is urged by all residents, because a simple spark can cause a major wildfire. All outdoor burning is highly discouraged. Gusty winds are anticipated to increase and any fires which occur will spread rapidly so limiting sources of ignition is essential. Residents are also encouraged to create defensible space by clearing brush away from their homes and businesses. Smoke drifting in from regional fires may cause breathing difficulties so remain indoors and limit outside exposure.

Clutter-Busting: Letting Go of What’s Holding You Back Author Talk with Brooks Palmer

Author Brooks Palmer will be speaking at the Woodland Public Library on Wednesday, February 1st at 6:00pm in the Leake Community Room. Palmer will be discussing his book and how clutter can affect your emotions and sense of well-being. In his fourteen years of Clutter Busting in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City, Brooks Palmer realized the intense emotional connection most people have with material possessions, and that internal clutter must be addressed before external clutter can be discarded. He created his Clutter Busting method to help people let go of those things they no longer need and to open the doors for new possibilities. Piles of junk in garages and closets, overflowing papers on desks, items unused for years, masses of unanswered email, clothing never worn, useless gifts that collect dust — all these things, says Brooks Palmer, come weighted with shame and guilt and have a suffocating effect on spirit and soul. By tossing out these unneeded items, we are also eliminating their negative influences, freeing up energy, and unlocking our potential. Join us at the library for this wellness talk.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Workshop

January 4, 2017

Looking to have a less stressful 2017? Learn about an entirely different type of fitness–fitness of the mind- at the Woodland Public Library on Wednesday, January 11th from 6:00-7:30 in the Library Leake Room. Join Denise Dempsey for a workshop on mindfulness-based stress reduction. This workshop is the first in the Library’s 2nd Annual Commit2Fit:Wellness Series. Mindfulness is the practice of cultivating non-judgmental awareness in day-to-day life. It helps us cultivate our potential to experience each moment, no matter how difficult or intense, with serenity and clarity. By feeling better, sleeping better, increasing our ability to cope with stressful situations, improve self-esteem, and renew enthusiasm for life and work, one can feel more alive and joyful and gain immediate access to powerful inner resources for healing.

Since 2003, Denise has led over 80 MBSR classes in healthcare, academic and business settings, reaching more than 1200 students. With 20 years of experience in mindfulness-based interventions, she also leads retreats and alumni programs.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction with Denise Dempsey is a workshop presented through the Woodland Public Library Commit2Fit:Wellness Series. Commit2Fit:Wellness is a series of Wednesday talks and Saturday morning walks. Community walks are each Saturday in January, February and March, from 9-10 am at Douglass Park, on the corner of Road 98 and El Dorado Street in Woodland. You Can Help Avoid Localized Flooding

December 10, 2014

If you have a stormdrain inlet/grate near your home, one of the best ways to help avoid localized flooding is to keep it clear of leaves and debris. To remove leaves and debris away from grates, take a rake or shovel and drag the debris sideways away from the grate. Do not leave the leaves or debris in the gutter or near the grate as this will cause the debris to be washed right back onto the grate. Always use proper safety precautions! If you are going to step off of the sidewalk to clean grates, be sure to look for oncoming traffic and other pedestrians.

***DROUGHT UPDATE***

June 13, 2014
Until we complete construction of our Surface Water Project, groundwater remains Woodland's only source of water. Due in part to the drought, the City's groundwater levels are now the lowest in recent history. Currently the City has 19 groundwater wells. Some groundwater wells are already 'off line’ due to contaminant levels and others may need to be shut down if water levels keep dropping. This could result in water shortages and mandatory restrictions on water use in the near future.

You can help avoid water shortages by limiting water use from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. when the demand on our water supply is at its maximum. We are urging customers to refrain from watering lawns or irrigating landscaping during these times.

Water users’ efforts to conserve water have already resulted in a 20% reduction in water use from recent years and helped the situation from being worse. Please continue doing what you can to conserve and avoid using water, as much as possible, during the above "peak" hours.

By working together, we can avoid water shortages and protect the groundwater wells that we rely upon for our water supply. For additional information and tips on easy ways to save water, please visit cityofwoodland.org/waterconservation, and/or contact our water conservation staff at conservewater@cityofwoodland.org; (530) 661-2067.

Thank you,

Paul Navazio
City Manager

Take Action to Protect Your Water Supply

January 21, 2014
Woodland is currently asking water customers to voluntarily cut back water use by 20% in order to prevent potential future water shortages. 2014 is starting out as the third dry year in a row. The Governor has delcared a drought emergency. Little or no rain means the City has less groundwater to pump, and pumping water to deliver to homes and businesses becomes more expensive. As the demand for water increases during the summer months, we could face a shortage in water supplies. For tips on conserving water both indoors and outdoors, please visit www.cityofwoodland.org/waterconservation.
