Sec. 17A-1-3. Redemption of property.

The true owner of lost property may claim the property at any time during the three-month period by providing proof of ownership satisfactory to the police chief, or his or her designee. Before releasing the property to the owner, the police department may charge the owner for the care of the property and publication, if any, an amount not exceeding ten percent of the value of the property. In the event the person seeking to claim the property cannot provide satisfactory proof of ownership, the police department may refuse to deliver the property until ordered to do so by a court of competent jurisdiction.
