Sec. 17A-1-2. Safekeeping and inventory by police department.

(a) Property received pursuant to Section 17A-1-1 of this chapter shall be stored by the city in a safe place for a period of three months, unless sooner claimed by the true owner. Any property not claimed by the end of the three-month period shall be deemed unclaimed property and shall be subject to disposal pursuant to this article.
(b) For the purposes of identifying the true owner of the property, identifying and disposing of any dangerous or perishable items, and documenting the contents of any item of property for the protection of the true owner, the police department may conduct an inventory search of any property found. To the extent reasonably necessary to fulfill these purposes, the police department may open closed containers found within any item of property. (Ord. No. 935, § 4; Ord. No. 937, § 1; Ord.
