|On 05-24-2013 at 10:49 P.M. Officers of the Woodland Police Department were dispatched to 33 W. Elliot St. on a report of a domestic disturbance. The suspect, 57 year old Woodland resident Howard Steven Wilbanks, had reportedly assaulted his girlfriend and may have armed himself with a knife.|
When officers encountered Wilbanks he was uncooperative and refused to comply with officers demands. When the officers attempted to take Wilbanks into custody he began fighting with the officers striking one officer in the face with his fist. One of the officers was a K9 officer and he released his police service dog from the patrol car.
Using the police service dog the officers were able to take Wilbanks into custody. Other officers arrived to assist and the injured officers were treated at Sutter Davis Hospital. The officers sustained non-life threatening injuries. Wilbanks also sustained non-life threatening injuries. Wilbanks was treated at Woodland Memorial Hospital before being booked at the Yolo Co. Jail.
Wilbanks was arrested on felony charges for spousal battery, vandalism, resisting an executive officer in performance of his duty, battery on a peace officer causing injury, resisting arrest causing injury to an officer, and parole violation.
The officers and the police service dog returned to duty.
