Guard Start - Junior Lifeguard Program

We offer Guard Start, American Red Cross’s Junior Lifeguard program for participants age 11-13 looking to get a head start on a future as a lifeguard.  The program includes training in rescue skills and drills; general pool operations; hands on training during swim lessons and public swim, and more.  All Guard Start participants are given an opportunity to complete community service hours outside the program hours.  Participants must be able to swim 50 yards without stopping.  Guard Start DOES NOT certify participants as lifeguards. All classes are held at Charles Brooks Community Swim Center - 155 N. West St. Registration is accepted at the Parks & Recreation office - 2001 East St.

Fitness Module:
A focus on personal and physical fitness is introduced in this module. Coursework includes improved swimming strokes and swimming farther distnaces and how to find your target heart rate.

Prevention and Response Module:
The Prevention and Response Module lays the basic groundwork of a career in  lifeguarding. Candidates are taught how to prevent aquatic emergencies, how to recognize water emergencies, and basic water rescue skills are introduced. 

Providing Care Module:
Providing care demonstrates how to help you in a water emergency and how to provide care during breathing and cardiac emergencies. Participants are taught CPR and how to use an AED.

Leadership Module:
Participants are put to the test in communicating effectively, desicion making, and confronted with real-life scenarios lifeguards may have encounter in the leadership module. Customer service and teamwork are critical components throughout the module.
