Summer with the Library

Woodland Public Library’s "Summer with the Library"

Summer with the Library kicks off on June 1st and runs to August 15th. While this year’s summer reading program will be completely virtual, it will feature all of the fun performances and events of previous years. Once again, the summer theme at the library for all ages is Read, Make, Explore. The goal is to have participants read at least 5 books, make 5 things, and explore 5 places to encourage learning throughout the year.

Summer with the Library has events for children, teens, and adults throughout the week through June and July for all ages. Since the library building is closed this year, Summer with the Library will feature weekly “Grab and Go” kits. These kits will be available from curbside pickup and will contain materials for Maker Mondays, Paint Nights, Make & Explore Thursdays, and teen craft packs. Each week, videos for these events will be released on a variety of online platforms for participants to follow along from home.

The details and calendar for all of our virtual events throughout the summer can be found on our website, cityofwoodland.org/library, Facebook, Instagram, and Eventbrite pages @WoodlandPublicLibrary. All participants (kids, teens, and adults) can register for themselves and their families at wpl.beanstack.org

For children: Virtual storytimes will continue on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Every Tuesday at 1pm the library will host a performance show that can be watched from home via Zoom. Prior registration is required, and links to events can be found on our website. Performances will include a puppet show, bubble show, Magic show, an anime drawing workshop, an informational performance about bats, and much more! During Make and Explore Thursdays, there will be a tutorial video posted on our Facebook and Instagram pages to follow along with the weekly craft that can be picked up during that week as a Make & Explore kit, including building a penny spinner, an engineering building challenge, a skittles science experiment, making a kaleidoscope, forensic science fingerprint challenge, and more. Activities are geared to 5-12 year olds. Fridays will be about exploring the library’s resources, the Woodland community, and beyond.

There are prizes and end-of-summer raffles as well as a free book for everyone who reads five books. Kids ages 4-11 can also choose to log minutes instead of books. Reading just 5 books over the summer helps kids stay on track with school and prevent the Summer Slide, losing skills from the school year. Earned prizes can be picked up starting on June 15th and will be available until September 4th. Raffle winnings must be claimed by September 30th.

For teens:  All teens, ages 12-18 and in grades 7th-12 grade, are invited to participate in the QuaranTEEN Summer with the Library Reading Program brought to you by the Teen Advisory Board! The Library challenges teens to read 5 books, make 5 things, and explore in 5 ways from the comfort and safety of their own home.

After teens read five books they will get a free book* of their choice and a $5 Dutch Brothers Gift Card. To complete the program teens must also make 5 things and explore in 5 ways to earn a raffle ticket for a chance to win a raffle prize. Teens can pick up books and craft kits at the library at curbside pickup.

Raffle prizes include: Nintendo Switch Lite, $250 gift certificate for a skateboard from SorD Boardshop, Mongoose Scooter, and 145 Piece Deluxe Art Creativity Set. *Free book value up to $25 from Avid Readers Bookstore or up to $15 from Amazon.com.

After completing all 15 challenges (read 5 books, make 5 things, explore 5 ideas), teens can earn more raffle tickets by submitting book reviews for books they have read. Raffle winners will be announced in late August.

For adults: Adults can also participate in Summer with the Library by reading 5 books, making 5 things, and exploring in 5 ways and logging activities online. We will have special virtual events throughout the summer like Maker Monday projects, Adult Paint Night, and Adult Bingo Night. Participants who complete all the activities will be entered into a raffle for prizes that include gift certificates from local stores in restaurants in Woodland.

The library encourages everyone to spend Summer with the Library taking advantage of the amazing free virtual events, programs, and chance to win prizes. All the raffle prizes generously sponsored by the Woodland Public Library Friends of the Library. The Library is excited to see you spend your summer reading, making, and exploring!
